唱出一首非常知名的歌曲，也許對歌手來說是一件很有成就感的事情，但是，如果因為歌曲而被定型，反而影響到後來的表現的話，恐怕也不完全是那麼愉快的事情。也許，介於聽眾不熟悉與非常熟悉之間，還是有一點矛盾存在的。比如說這首由60年代知名鄉村歌手Skeeter Davis所演唱的"The End of the World"，其歌曲知名的程度，大概就讓人們提到Skeeter Davis就直接聯想到"The End of the World"。

Skeeter Davis本名是Mary Frances Penick，從小就是個活潑愛表演的孩子，所以，寵愛她的爺爺就給他取了個綽號Skeeter（蚊子），從此之後，這個綽號就一直跟著她，甚至成了她的藝名。高中的時候，遇見了另外一位同姓的女同學Betty Jack Davis。因為兩人都愛唱歌，所以他們救自己組成了一個歌唱團體，稱做The Davis Sister。這個雙人唱團也在50年代期間，出了幾張唱片，甚至還曾經在1953年，因"I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know"一曲，拿到鄉村音樂排行榜的冠軍。不過，好景不長，就在這一年，她們捲入一場車禍當中，而奪走了Betty的性命。受傷的Skeeter，尊重Betty母親的意見，和Betty的妹妹繼續以The Davis Sister的團名表演。直到隔了幾年之後，Skeeter Davis才終於開始以個人身份繼續演唱。

雖然只剩下一個人，Skeeter卻也是很很成功的獲得市場的喜愛，甚至也曾經入圍Grammy Awards。終於，在隻身努力5年之後，在1963年，發表了她個人事業的顛峰代表作－－"The End of the World"。這首歌據說作曲者Sylvia Dee原來是寫出對其過世父親的思念，但在Skeeter Davis的詮釋之下，卻非常細膩地轉為少女對失去戀人的感傷。這首歌獲得空前的成功，甚至使得Skeeter成為歷史上唯一可以在告示牌四項排行榜（Hot 100、country、easy listening、soul/rhythm and blues）中，都打入前十名的女性演唱者。

在Skeeter Davis的演唱生涯中，雖然5次入圍Grammy Awards，不過，就因為"The End of the World"的存在，使得她實在無法超越自己，而再獲得更高的矚目了。勉強要說的話，大概只有一首歌算是比較有名的，那就是她和Bobby Bare合作的"A Dear John Letter"。這首歌講述一位名為John，在海外服役的弟兄慘遭「兵變」的「恐怖故事」。有趣的是，女孩的新對象，卻剛好也叫John呢。時值越戰，部隊裡為了擔心影響士氣，還禁撥了這首歌。所以，這個有名的故事反而讓歌名成為成語，"Dear John Letter"就成了「訣別信」的意思啦。（不過，歌曲本身好像沒那麼有名啊。雖然是輕快的歌，但確實也是一首聽了也會令人，特別是服役中的男生，感受到悲情的歌。如果，真有人很想認識這首歌的話，請留言，下次拿來介紹吧。）

回到"The End of the World"，非常多年前，當我第一次聽這首歌時，就覺得非常特別。（雖然想當時還是「少年不識愁滋味」的年紀。）"Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore?"，其歌詞把失去的痛苦感覺表達的相當適切，好像一切都停止下來，事物的意義都消失了一般，「世界末日」，字面或含意上也就是這樣的情形吧。也或者，這也表達了"Smile, and the world smiles with you. Cry, and you cry alone."的感觸吧。再加上Skeeter Davis以純淨天真的方式來詮釋，我想，聽到這首歌的人，大概都可以受到這一首失戀情歌的感染吧。
