如果說，Charlene和她的"I've Never Been to Me"的出名過程很崎嶇的話，那"(They Long to Be) Close to You"這首歌恐怕也不遑多讓。這首由Burt Bacharach和Hal David合寫的歌，最早是由Richard Chamberlain於1963年所演唱的。當初是以單曲的方式發行的。在以前黑膠唱片的時代，因為唱片有A、B兩面，所以一張單曲通常會有兩首歌。而在Richard Chamberlain的版本裡，這首歌是在B面，A面的歌是"Blue Guitar"。發行之後，"Blue Guitar"非常受到歡迎，但是當初仍然使用"They Long to Be Close to You"這個完整歌名的歌，卻被冷落而不被注意。到了1965年，Dionne Warwick也發行了她的版本。不過，同樣的情形再次發生，在這首歌另一面的單曲"Here I Am"紅了，這首歌再度成為贈品的陪襯角色。

一直要到1970年，由木匠兄妹The Carpenters所演唱的，最受世人熟知的版本終於誕生。Karen美妙純淨的歌聲，讓這首由Richard重新編曲的"Close to You"耳目一新。（為了發行的時候比較容易讓人們記憶，連歌名與同名的專輯名稱都縮短了。）這首歌終於獲得前所未有的成功，登上美國Billboard Hot 100第1名，同時蟬聯4週冠軍。

The Capenters是由keyboard身份的哥哥Richard和主唱兼drummer的妹妹Karen所組成的。他們的父母從小就栽培他們在音樂上的素養。Richard從12歲就開始彈鋼琴、Karen受到哥哥的影響，也開始學習樂器。不過，她所挑選的樂器，恐怕時至今日，也是比較少女孩子會去選擇的、屬於打擊的鼓類。不過，在父母的支持之下，他們經過相當時日的練習，倒也培養了不錯的技巧。

而自60年代中期開始，Richard就一直想要組成一個樂團，將他和妹妹的音樂帶給世人，其中也包括曾和同學組成的Spectrum。不過，做音樂這行，沒有相當的決心恐怕也是挺困難的，經過一段時間Spectrum裡的其他人紛紛都離開了，最後還是只剩下Richard和Karen兩個人。於是，兩人樂團的型態就這麼確定了。同時，由於多軌式錄音的技術開始出現，即使是兩人樂團，Richard也總算可以實現將他的琴聲、Karen的鼓聲和兩人的歌聲結合的心願。（其實，這樣的技術也可以在The Beatles後期的音樂見到。通常vocal和樂器是分開來錄製，有時候連樂團的樂器和背景製作都是分開來的。）

經過長久的努力，他們的試聽帶終於受到A&M Records的一位老闆Herb Alpert的賞識。在一開始，他們的主要是由Richard將過去一些其他樂團或歌手的經典樂曲重新編曲，再以Karen唱出屬於他們的版本。其中，這段時間較受到歡迎的，便是在首張專輯裡所翻唱的The Beatles的"Ticket to Ride"。其受歡迎的程度，讓唱片公司在專輯再版發行時，將原本的名稱由"Offering"換成"Ticket to Ride"。也由於這首歌，當時已是知名作曲者的Burt Bacharach，在聽過The Carpenters的"Ticket to Ride"之後，覺得非常喜愛，並對A&M Records的另一個老闆Jerry Moss提出一個建議，讓The Carpenters嘗試重新編曲試唱Bacharach自己寫的一些歌曲。而在著手這項編曲工作之後，Richard自己最喜愛的，就是這首"(The Love to Be) Close to You"。他喜愛這首歌的程度，甚至當Alpert問Richard對於這首重新編曲製作的歌曲有什麼樣的感覺時，Richard的答案是：「就算這首歌沒有拿到冠軍，這也會是A&M最賣座的歌曲。」就是基於這樣的喜愛，The Carpenters在1970年所發表、樂團二張專輯，便是包含這首「歷經風霜」的翻唱歌、同時以之為名的"Close to You"。

這張專輯裡，除了"(The Love to Be) Close to You"，還有另外一首"We've Only Just Begun"，也非常受到歡迎。其在Billboard Hot 100僅次"(The Love to Be) Close to You"，而排名第2名。並且，"We've Only Just Begun"同時也在Billboard Adult Contemporary在榜14週，維持7週冠軍。另外，配合著The Carpenters超清新的歌聲與形象，不僅"Close to You"這張專輯入圍了Grammy Awards最佳專輯，"We've Only Just Begun"入圍年度最佳歌曲，也因為在"(The Love to Be) Close to You"的表現，他們獲得最佳流行音樂團體與最佳新人的獎項。（事實上，"We've Only Just Begun"與"(The Love to Be) Close to You"也分別在1998年與2000年，進入Grammy名人堂。）

就從這個時候開始，The Carpenters跨越原本新人樂團的界線，成為非常受歡迎的人氣流行樂團。
