這首歌是The Carpenters在1973年於專輯"Now & Then"中的歌曲，同時也是Billboard Hot 100的亞軍歌曲。（冠軍歌曲是他們前一張專輯"A Song for You"裡的"Top of the World"，兩首歌的作詞者都是John Bettis，是Richard在學校時期的好朋友。）雖然這首歌只有獲得亞軍，但這首歌卻應該是The Carpenters最知名的代表作品了，相信即使不太清楚The Carpenters有哪些作品的人，也應該聽過這首充滿懷舊風味的歌曲才是。

名氣對一個人的影響是好或壞，真的很難去判斷。隨著Karen乾淨的歌聲與父母強力維持之下樂團清新的形象，The Carpenters成為風靡歌壇的團體，不僅連續出了幾張受歡迎的專輯，甚至在1973年，受到Pres. Nixon的稱讚，認為他們是年輕人的楷模，且邀請他們在白宮裡演出。在這樣的壓力下，Karen不僅要求自己要具備更完美的歌喉，也為了讓自己在螢光幕前更好看，開始嘗試各種非理性的減重方式。也因此，她開始罹患了精神性的厭食症。也就因為這樣，即使在完美的形象之下，The Carpenters的出片成績一直很好，但Karen的健康狀況也因為惡性減重而變糟，這使得樂團的表演開始出現偶爾需要配合Keran修養而暫停。相較於哥哥Richard的情形也並沒有比較好，在壓力之下，在70年代末期，他染上了毒癮。

而在70年代末期這段時間裡，他們也嘗試要改變一些曲風，甚至曾經在1977年的專輯中出現Andrew Lloyd Webber在歌劇"Evita"中的歌曲"Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"。但是，這些「創新」並沒有獲得市場的熱烈響應。（附帶一提，Webber要成為超級紅的作曲家，仍要等到數年之後，他寫出了"Cats"(1981)和"The Phantom of the Opera"(1986)。而也許最多人聽過，但顯然應該不是最好的"Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"，應該是Madonna在電影版的"Evita"中所唱的版本，則已經是1997年了，和The Carpenters的版本之間差了20年。）

之後，在Richard戒毒時，Karen單飛了一段時間，也並沒有什麼表現。一直到1981年，Richard解決毒癮問題，準備重整旗鼓，而Karen也開始想要徹底解決自己厭食症的問題。但不幸的事情卻發生了，Karen操之過及地增加體重以及一貫的心理壓力，超出了她衰弱的心臟所能承受的負荷，1983年二月，她因為心臟病發作而過世了。於是，十餘年的樂團也就在這非常意外的情況下結束了。後來，雖然Richard也嘗試將一些已經錄製成果進行整理，自己也出了一張專輯，但是，在歌壇的風向已經改變的情況下，在市場上是寂寞的，Richard也就退居幕後的工作。The Carpenters的歌曲，也就只能在A&M所推出的精選集中出現了。
