如果，光只是聽這首歌的旋律，恐怕會以為這是一首相當輕快而輕鬆的歌，但是，如果稍微注意一下歌詞，絕對會很驚訝的發現，原來歌曲所講述的故事，是相當感傷的。

一般都認為這首歌的背景便是講述John Lennon在1980年一個結束完錄音工作回到住所的冬夜裡，被瘋狂「披頭四」（The Beatles）歌迷Mark David Chapman槍殺的故事。

槍殺的過程，在wiki上有非常詳細的描寫：當夜10:50，Lennon被忽然從背後叫住，就在他回應的當下，立刻被對方連開五槍，其中僅有一槍失準略過頭部，打在牆上，另外的四槍則造成致命的傷害。而在門房聽到Lennon的驚叫聲趕出來時，詢問了Chapman他做了什麼，這名精神異常的歌迷則冷靜的回答：「我剛射殺了John Lennon。」而令人感到諷刺的是，在幾個小時前，Lennon和他的日裔妻子Yoko Ono（也就是歌詞中多次提到的"she"）離開住所時，一群歌迷帶著他們剛發行的專輯"Double Fantacy"請Lennon簽名時，這名兇手居然也出現在當時群眾的相片裡。

不過，歌曲的創作者Mike Oldfield在1995年接受訪問時表示，其實他創作的靈感並非源自於這個音樂史上的事件，而是來自於"Houdini"這部講述著名的魔術與逃脫大師Harry Houdini一生的電影。但是，他也同時表明，也許這件發生在他剛到New York的事件，終究對他造成了潛意識上的影響，不知不覺地在他創作這首歌時，融入歌曲之中。

這首歌發行於1983年，Mike Oldfield的專輯"Crises"裡，演唱者是蘇格蘭的歌手Maggie Reilly，而音樂的部分則是由Oldfield包辦。如果去Amazon查查這張專輯的話，就會發現這張專輯每首歌的演唱者都不同。這似乎也是Oldfield這位號稱可以掌握數十種樂器的音樂創作人的創作習慣，自己負責創作和音樂，而找他自己覺得適合的歌手來演唱。這首歌最特別的地方則在中間有一小段吉他的solo，將歌曲的氣氛營造到最高點，這便是Oldfield的實力所在。

這首非常膾炙人口的歌曲，不僅在美國表現得很好，也在歐洲創造佳績。另一個可以看出這首歌特色的地方，便是其翻唱的版本號稱超過130種，甚至連有些翻唱版本本身，其受歡迎的程度也非常高。關於這些「豐功偉業」詳細的內容，就請參考wiki非常詳盡的介紹吧。在這裡，我只特別介紹兩個版本：一個是Dana Winner在2001年於專輯"Unforgettable"中的所演唱的。這個版本比起Oldfield的版本，相較起來要柔軟與空靈些，似乎也更適合歌詞描述的情緒。另一個則是加拿大歌手Aselin Debison在她12歲時的專輯"Sweet Is the Melody"(2002)中的演唱。她的聲音其實是走純真風格的，會特別介紹她的版本的原因是，在這個版本裡，編曲中吉他的部分被小提琴取代了，而造成了很特別的風味唷。

至於，電影或影集，老實說啦，雖然是一首耳熟能詳的歌，我還真一時想不起來曾經出現在哪裡，就拿Oldfield所提的"Houdini"當作一個牽連吧:P。
